Gophers
Pocket gophers, commonly referred to as just gophers, are burrowing rodents of the family Geomyidae. There are five species of pocket gophers that occur in California, however the most likely to be encountered in Los Angeles County is the Valley or Botta's pocket gopher (Thomomys bottae). Pocket gophers are a small rodent about 5 to 7 inches long not including the tail.
Moles
Moles are small mammals adapted to a subterranean lifestyle. They have cylindrical bodies, velvety fur, very small inconspicuous ears and eyes, reduced hind limbs and short, powerful forelimbs with large paws adapted for digging. The broad-footed mole is common in most of California except the hot deserts and portions of the Central Valley.
Voles
Voles are small rodents that are relatives of lemmings and hamsters, but with a stouter body; a shorter, hairy tail; a slightly rounder head; smaller ears and eyes; and differently formed molars. The California vole, M. Californicus, is the most widespread vole in the state, found in the Owens and Central valleys and nearly the entire length of the coastal range. As some of the most prolific breeders in the rodent family, voles can produce 5-10 liters per year with 3-6 young per litter. Voles reproduce throughout the entire year, with peak rates in the spring and summer.
Rats
Rats are various medium-sized, long-tailed rodents that can bring many diseases to a home. Fueled by an increasing homeless population and government restrictions on select pesticides, rat infestations have spiked in major cities across California, most notably Los Angeles.
